Friday june 4th blog

"This is why they send kids to war. Young men. Just give us an order. If you've constructed enough of a reason for us to go blow ourselves up .... We won't question a bit."(p.156) This quote is said by the main character when he feels as though he is being forced to do somthing just becuase he is younger than the adult.

This quote is a good quote becuase it shows how young people are easily brain washed. A few good examples of this would be hitler's youth how he trained young people to be nazi's when they grow up. Another example how this is true is how young people were easily drafted for ww2 and were sent in first on d-day because they thought they were invincible and wouldn't die. The older war vetrans knew that if they were to go in first it would be suicide so they let the young people go in first. This quote is really strong becuase it's true how young people are easily minipulated to do anything.

"When you fall off a horse, you've got to get right back on." P.20
This Quote is when he was talking to his friend about giving up.
What he is trying to say is to keep trying and never give up even if you fail the first time. I feel as though this quote is true because if you fail the first time and just give up you won't get anywhere. We sould have some of the inventions we have today because they usually failed to work the first time so the inventors had to keep making changes to the invention until it worked. Same as in school if you give up after failing a test you will just not get anywhere in school.

"The front door opens and Nick Brock steps with Lynn in tow. Everybody stops and ackgnowledges him like he's a mafia boss." (165). This quote is said when Nick and Lynn walk into the room.
This quote shows how much respect everyone has for Nick and Lynn. I think this quote is exaggerated by the author. In my experiences when someone walks through the door no matter who it is I don't think everyone would stop what the're doing just to ackgnowledge them. I think would would be more realistic is that they just keep doing what the're doing and maybe say hi.

"'No freshmen allowed!"'

Is a quote taken from the book when the main character tries to cut across a hallway in the school.

This quote reminds me a lot of Edina highschool because of the commons. There were rumors when I was in 9th grade that only Juniors and Seniors were allowed to use the commons. I would hear stories of people having to go downstairs cut across then go back upstairs. I of course never fell for such shenanagins. I knew better becuase who was going to stop me from walking across the commons? no one. I think in carters case it's pretty funny how there's actually people there patroling the hallway and not allowing them to cross. I also think it's pretty messed up too because he has to cross the long way which takes up a lot of his time.

Friday april 23rd (LATE)

"I'm taking a math quiz and spacing off as usual."

This quote is said by Carter in the beginning of a chapter and he's taking a math quiz as you can see by what's said in the quote.

I can relate to this I guess becaues I tend to just day dream during math becuase I find it boring since there's really no interactive work you have to do. All we do in math is take notes that are already in the book. I can't see why he's spacing off during a quiz though since it still needs to get done. I guess the math teacher just gives him more time to do the quiz than our teacher. Match sucks.

Friday April 30th

"A man from a clothing store called me 'husky' once, it made me cry" is narrated by Carter when he was talking about being a linemen because he was "big".

I thought this was kinda funny and kind of sad. I thought it was funny becaues he used the word "husky" and that's pretty funny because no one really uses that word. I also thought it was kinda sad because the guy was making fun of Carter's size. The guy wasn't the only who made fun of his size either, he had his mom and people from school making fun of his size too.

In school I have never seen someone make fun of someone elses size to their face. I usually hear people talking about it behind other peopel's backs. I guess it's because I go live and go to Edina and everyone is a giant pussy.

"These kids are all trying so hard to be weird. I'm genuinely weird, so I can spot the effort a mile away."
I think this quotes relates to a lot of people in school and in outside life. I sometimes feel this way when I'm walking alone at a mall or something and a few teens are screwing around or are trying too hard to be funny. Yea bad quote to choose but uh yea I'll try to pick a better one next time in a rush right now sorry.

"This is our house, this is our home."
This quote is said by the main character at the end of book after she and her mom buys a house. At the end of the book the abusive father leaves the family and goes back to asia with another women. The main character makes it into college and buys a house with her mom.

This quote shows that the main character and her mom finally reached the American dream. They were able to come to america with empty pockets and make a living, they eventually were able to buy a house. I am amazed by this because it's a true story and I thought they were going to crumble and go back to Asia since the dad left them to go back. They rose above the odds and through hard work the main character was able to attend college and have their own home.

Week4

"Gomo gives me a cup of dirty black water inside. I can see bubbles floating...This drink bites the inside of my mouth and throat like swallowing tiny fish bones. This is what Mi Gook people love?"

This quote is showing the main character taking he first sip of soda ever. The quote lets us know that she dislikes soda because the carbonation makes he mouth and throat feel funny.

This quote makes me think about new foods from different countries might be weird to us but our food might be weird to them too. I mean you think that everyone would like soda but to a person trying it for the first time it might feel funny to them. It shows that for some people they might not like the things they try the first time but as they try it more and more they will learn to like it.

Week 3

"This is heaven I say. Mi Gook is heaven"

This quote is said when they first get off the plane and enter america. Mi Gook means America I'm guessing, it's heaven to them because it's a chance to them for a better life.

This quote really brings out some feelings for me. My parents came to America from Veitnam to do the same thing as their parents are doing. It's to find a better life for their kids, of course my parents did have kids yet but they were planning. In Vietnam back when they emigrated here going to America meant you were going to have a better life even if you didn't know the language, people or location of anything because of how bad it was.

As you can see this quote really connects to me because their parents are doing the same thing my parents did. And that same thing is to find a better life for them and their family.

Night 1st post

"'strip! Hurry up! Raus! Hold on only to your belt and your shoes...'"
The quote shows how the nazi's make them strip down to nothing but their belt and shoes. It makes the Jews think the're more like animals than humans. It also lets them know that nazi's are superrior to them because they are wearing clothes and giving the orders. It also makes sure that the Jews don't have any weapons to use against them. So the nazi's making the Jews strip down was a good tactic because it brought down the moral of the Jews and it made sure they had no weapons or contraband.
